Python - Programming Language

As mentioned earlier, I intend to learn python just to broaden my knowledge other the languages we are being taught, it seems to be a fairly useful language which is able to incorporate into C and Java fairly easily, also with one thing that I found rather amusing was their statement basically along the lines of "Build your own web server in 3 lines of code", which in this day and age of webservers being extremely code intensive to setup.

Postcard - Before and After

This is a house in Cremyll which had been bombed during WW2 and hadn't been rebuilt...sort of...

And these are the visual "improvements" to show what the house would or could look like in a parallel dimension. I designed it specifically to tie in with my groups idea of working within ecosystems constructed from signal radiation, and also to make the area more visually appealing...

Stonehouse Maps

We have been asked today to make a map showing our initial observations of stonehouse and have a key explaining what is going on in the map. I decided that I would identify rich and poor areas of Stonehouse just from the information provided in the aerial photo mode on Google Maps. I have done this in three areas in a society class structure taken from the Georgian era. For this working class will be identified as red areas, middle class will be in amber areas and upper class will be situated in green areas. I will also be circling any areas to be used with a black line.

Walk around Stonehouse

Today we went for a walk around Stonehouse and I was able to fully see the potential of the different areas. While we were walking around I was taking note of the number of transmitted signals in each area and their signal strengths as I thought these may be useful later on. During our walk I also took videos of certain areas that I thought would be good to focus on.

Transforming Stonehouse

For IDAT106 we have been asked to explore the design possibilities of re-invigorating the area of Plymouth, that is Stonehouse.

My initial thoughts about the brief were:

Where is Stonehouse?

Why does it need a facelift?

What potential areas could be targeted for renovation or complete restructuring?

Stonehouse seems to be, almost like an area with what seems to be a big military background, and some of this can still be seen in current times, such as the Royal Marines barracks or the old navy hospital.

Other points of interest include Victoria Park, which is situated within Stonehouse. From aerial maps taken from Google Maps it looks almost as if originally the park didn't exist, as it seems to be considerably below sea level, which in itself is intriguing as it backs straight down to the seafront beneath Stonehouse bridge.

Stonehouse does seem to require a rather large set of improvements made to it. It seems to contain lots of terraced housing and residential concrete high rises, as well as the fairly run down area that exists on and around Union Street. There are plenty of possibilities within this area. Union Street seems to have many derelict structures such as some of the theatres, which could be modernised and re-opened.

Initially, ares which I deem it to be possible to renovate and redesign include, Victoria Park, the south side of Union Street snd the waterfront area around Cremel. These would be ideal areas because they have plenty of potential with pre-existing structures to improve and the option of open spaces to fill with new and awe inspiring structures.

My Personal Achievement Plan

Below I have compiled my plan for what I hope to achieve in the near future.

Objective One:

Learn Python

Action:

I will spend some of my free time learning how to use the python programming language.

Evidence:

To prove my proficiency, I will attempt to pass an industry standard exam.

Prospective Date:

7th August 2010

Objective Two:

Time Planning

Action:

When I am working I will set myself more specific deadlines for work to be done, so that if anything goes wrong I have time to fix the problem.

Prospective Date:

Now Onwards ->

Objective Three:

Get my head around JavaScript.

Action:

spend some time outside of lectures going over what ive learnt in javascript and elaborating, ie. looking at books, internet etc

Evidence:

Passing exams in javascript.

Prospective Date:

Ongoing

Stonehouse Videos

In no particular order:

These videos show our explorations through stonehouse looking at built up environments and the contrasting areas. As we went round we took note of street names as reference of our journey this allowed us to amke a record of the different social and monetary environments dependant on the surrounding built structures. As we walked round i was also searching for all possible electronic signals eg. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc.
